Light of Darfur Ministry (LDM) - Darfur Discipleship & Relief Member
Light of Darfur
Ministry exists to bring the Hope of the Gospel to those suffering
in Internally Displaced People camps in Darfur, Sudan. Through
providing practical medical care and discipleship, LDM brings
Christ's light into the darkness of human suffering for the
Darfur Muslims and Animists who have been persecuted in the
genocide.
LDM
is led by Kenyan evangelist, Phillip. Read his story below:
Sometimes it is
hard to explain that people like Phillip the Evangelist are
not crazy, careless, or have some sort of “death wish.”
I think the Apostle Paul put it best in what he told
the Caesareans as they feared for his life and begged
him not to go to Jerusalem. In Acts 21: 12-14, he basically
said, “Yeah, I wouldn't mind if I die
because I'd be made whole with Jesus! But on
the other hand, I know you need me here ,
so I am torn and simply yield to His call.”
Phillip's only forms
of communication outside of Darfur are prayer and an unreliable
satellite phone. Originally,
we assigned him to work with one Muslim doctor from Darfur.
Together, they worked in a makeshift clinic all day. The doctor
watched as Philip prayed with and over patients, and he gave
Phillip a crash course on IV insertion and other vital-care
services. Day by
day, others have come to volunteer in the clinic, swelling
the medical team. Some of the volunteers come simply
out of curiosity about why anyone [Phillip] would choose,
of his own accord, to live in Darfur – with nothing but a
grass roof over his head.
This God-given curiosity
gives Phillip the perfect entrée to the love of Jesus.
People are truly amazed at Phillip's willingness to share
in their suffering and his nonjudgmental love of them.
So many have come to Christ that they have now formed
a time of worship and fellowship outside the clinic, just
after sunrise before their full-day's work begins.
Please pray in particular
for a young nurse assistant whom Phillip led to the Lord.
Her name is Hazenia. She is only about 20 and has an infant.
The Commander of the army told Hazenia they had lost too many
soldiers, and she would have to be mobilized to fight with
the troops. Hazenia
does not want to leave her baby for any reason, especially
to become a soldier! God
has blessed Phillip with favor in the eyes of the Commander,
so he spoke with the Commander about Hazenia. For now, the
Commander agreed that she can work in the clinic because he
sees she is needed there. However,
he made it clear that Hazenia is still “under his hand” and
he can come for her at any time.
The key to keeping Phillip in such
a volatile place is having the life-saving offering of our
free medicine and make-shift clinic in a camp of many thousands
where there is no other Western aid or organizational help
whatsoever. We are treating Malaria, life-threatening parasites,
complicated pregnancies and deliveries, and many other serious
conditions.
