Speak Out:
Elise
Cagle
"
I heard my lifelong friend, Louise Coggins who serves on the
Board of Make Way Partners, speak about the organization and
the mission to be accomplished. I had been curious about
this organization, and after hearing Louise speak, I wanted
any and all printed information I could take with me. The
brochure that really touched my heart was titled "If
you can't save them all...what difference does saving one
child from slavery make?" God gave me the wisdom
and guidance to understand the true answer to this question.
I knew that God wanted me to sponsor a child, and I was interested
how this would work for me. After all, the only thing
that would change was the balance in my checkbook! My
first child was Santino. I received a picture of him,
learned that he was active in school but at night had no place
to stay. I was told that he and other boys slept in
trees to avoid hyena attacks. I could barely comprehend
what his life was like. I prayed for him but often felt
frustrated because it was difficult for me to embrace the
reality of his life. I felt some degree of connection
with him and wished for more.
I will never forget
the day Make Way Partners called to inform me that
Santino had
been involved in a serious accident. He had been playing
after school, found something that interested him and picked
it up. He juggled it in his hands and then tossed it
in the air. This item exploded, scaring Santino and doing
great injury to his left hand and arm. When I received
the call, he was on his way to medical facilities several
hours away, and Make Way Partners was asking that I pray for
him. I was so overwhelmed with feelings for him. I left
my home, found two special friends and told them what happened
to Santino. I asked them to pray with me for his safety
and good medical care. We prayed together and thanked
God for all He could do for this precious boy. Both
friends assured me they would pray daily for him. I
gave them updates on his progress. The day I told my
friends that Santino was back in school was a joyous time
for us, and we thanked God for all He had done. I shared
with my friends that Santino was in really good spirits.
He commented to one of the teachers, "My injuries are
not that bad and it was good it happened on my left side because
I do most things with my right hand!" A true lesson
in being thankful for the good and not dwelling on the
bad.
One year later I wanted
to do something special for my friends, Steve and Louise Coggins,
to honor the work they continued to do for Make Way Partners.
I chose to sponsor another child in their honor, and my joys
continue to grow as does my special relationship with Christ.
I realize that I have received so much more that I have given.
I feel blessed to be a partner in this ministry."
