Sponsor FAQ

Sponsorship is a unique giving opportunity that creates a relationship between the giver and those at risk to slavery in Sudan and in the D R Congo. Through sponsorship, you are helping Make Way Partners grow a true orphan-care network to save, heal, protect and prepare thousands of at-risk orphans for leadership. Join our sponsorship family now, and together we can protect the lives of children at risk to modern-day slavery.

Does sponsorship allow me to sponsor an actual child?

Yes! Both “Walen and Malen” sponsors and “Be a Bridge” partners will receive a picture, name and basic information about a specific child to learn more about their life story. Make Way Partners cares for nearly 500 orphans in Sudan and 40 orphans in the D R Congo. All of them are excited to learn that they are not forgotten and that someone is praying for them specifically by name.  Welcome a child into your family today!

How much does sponsorship cost?

Through Make Way Partners' Child Sponsorship Program, you can provide complete care for an at-risk orphan in Sudan or in the D R Congo.

The Walen and Malen family ministry is unique in that it is one of the few sponsorship programs where you are providing complete care . When you support a child through most sponsorship organizations, you are subsidizing his or her care while the child has the good fortune of at least living with a family who simply needs help with school books or more food, for example. In Sudan and in the D R Congo, however, the situation is quite different. We have a lifetime commitment to these orphans because in Sudan they have seen their parents brutally murdered and then were left alone to die in the desert where they are vulnerable to wildlife, slave raiders, disease and starvation.  In the D R Congo, the orphans are extremely vulnearble to being taken into slavery by the numerous militia groups in the region.  In both countries, it is as if each child literally becomes our child as we may be his or her only surviving “Family.”

The total sponsorship cost provides food, education, medical care, loving house parents, discipleship and 24-hour armed security for our orphanage.

Walen or Malen providing Complete Care for an at-risk orphan:
$1260 per orphan/per year
or $105 per orphan/per month
Be a Bridge Some of our children in Sudan have partial support of $396 annually per child. This amount only helps meet their needs for food, education, medical care, loving house parents, discipleship and 24-hour armed security. In order to provide Complete Care of $1260 annually, we need someone to stand in the gap and pledge the following for a child already receiving partial support:

$864 per orphan/per year
or $72 per orphan/per month for a child already receiving partial support

We have many child sponsors who have offered support each year, and we hope you will, too!

100% of the donation for this sponsorship goes directly to care for a child.  No administration fees are taken out of these life-saving gifts.

Will I be able to correspond with my sponsored child?

Yes, writing a letter to your child in Sudan and in the D R Congo encourages them to remember that they are not forgotten!  In the past, our sponsors have not been able to correspond with the children or send them photos because there is no mail system in Sudan or in the area we work in D R Congo. However, now that we have missionaries stationed in Africa and there are several of us who come and go throughout the year, we will begin to hand carry letters and photos back and forth.

Please print your letters or cards in large, clear print. The children are learning English, but cursive writing would be hard for them to read. Be sure to include the child's full name and age. Mail your letters to our office, and we will be thrilled to carry them to your sponsored child on your behalf.

Guidelines for writing letters to your sponsored child:

*DO*
-DON'T-

•  Keep it Simple.

•  3-4 paragraph (max) letter in clear block print.

•  Encourage them with scripture verses and to remain faithful to Christ.

•  Share with your sponsored child about your prayers for them.

•  Write about your family (# of children, pets…).

•  Encourage them in their school studies - to study hard and listen to their teachers.

•  Write to them about what it would be like to be a pilot, pastor… (if you know what they hope to become).

•  Write to them about what activities you like to do and your work.

•  Send a family picture, a postcard of where you are from or a drawing from your children (in pictures please make sure everyone is modestly dressed.  We suggest not sending more than 3 photos.)

•  Don't write in Cursive – they are learning English but it is still complicated for them.

•  Don't write about Politics or Political Candidates.

Sudan looks to the USA to save them. It can be confusing for them because they either revere or fear different political leaders.

• Don't mention ‘I hope to meet you one day'.

To a child who has suffered extreme trauma they are not able to differentiate between a possibility and a promise. Mentioning this would be confusing to them.

• Don't mention money or financially supporting them because they think that they should be receiving that money directly.

•  Don't mention the trauma that they have suffered, what they have lost or about being an orphan.

•  No gifts (books, sticker sheets, soft picture albums, bracelets, beads, etc)

Read a note from a sponsor about receiving a letter from his child in Sudan:

"Kate and I received our letter from our sponsored child, Luka, yesterday.  It was one of the more incredible moments I've had in quite some time.  This may sound strange, but it made the whole experience of sponsorship so much more real.  Just to see the envelope smudged with dirt and fingerprints was simply astounding.  So, thanks for beginning that part of the ministry.  The ability to write to Luka is something we will greatly value."  - David

What information will I receive about the child I sponsor?

Each sponsor will receive :

•  An initial framed 4”x6” photo and status report on your child (first year)
•  Updated photos and letters from our staff about the progress of your child's growth
•  One letter and one picture a year from your child in Sudan or in the D R Congo
•  MWP Newsletters
•  MWP Holiday Mailings
•  Optional Email Updates

Why should I sponsor with Make Way Partners?

Passionate to share the Hope of the Gospel, Make Way Partners uses two criteria to select places of ministry:

•  Where women & children are at highest risk of human trafficking, forced prostitution and other forms of modern-day slavery.
•  Where little to no other help is available because it is considered either “too” dangerous, “too” expensive or “too” remote for most people to go.

Through the Make Way Partners sponsorship program, you will be able to make a direct impact in the lives of those at high risk to modern-day slavery and help us build an anti-trafficking orphan-care network throughout Sudan and in the D R Congo.

Additionally, we strive to be good stewards of the resources we receive to provide ministry to the ‘least of these'. 100% of all donations go directly to care for your sponsored child or children. Make Way Partners is accredited by ECFA (Evangelical Council of Financial Accountability), meeting the standards of responsible stewardship, including financial accountability, transparency and ethical fundraising.

Are my contributions tax deductible?

Yes. Make Way Partners will provide an annual Record of Donations that meets IRS requirements.

How long will my sponsorship last?

That's entirely up to you. Sponsorship is a voluntary, ongoing contribution. Many of our sponsors have supported their child for many years, and we hope our relationship with you will be long-term as well!

Can I give a gift sponsorship?

Yes! You are able to share the gift of sponsorship with a loved one or colleague by selecting a sponsorship level and entering the gift recipient's information under the ‘in honor of' area on the donation page. The recipient will soon receive a photo of the child you sponsored in their honor and a welcome package introducing them to Make Way Partners and the Sponsorship Program.

Who can I contact if I have questions about my sponsorship?

You may contact a MWP staff member at 1-205-240-8597 or send an e-mail to sponsorship@makewaypartners.org either to sign up as a child sponsor, to find out more information or to make changes to your sponsorship account.
