WIDOWS' TUKELS - MWP SLAVE REPATRIATION MINISTRY

Women from MWP Slave Repatriation MinistryIn Nyamlel, many women villagers were abducted by the Janjaweed, genitally mutilated and forced to serve as sex-slaves for many years. After a dangerous escape from their captors in the North, these women, with children at their side, returned to the villages from where they were taken.

Many are now widows or their husbands will not take them back due to their ‘contamination' as slaves. Most of these women escaped with the children they were forced to bear while in sexual captivity.

In Sudan, the way a woman survives is to be married. For such ‘damaged' women, that is rarely possible. So, with no hope of income and no government infrastructure to help them rebuild their lives, Make Way Partners receives these former slaves and widows, helping them start a new life of freedom.

The dance of Freedom

Sponsorship Program: MWP has developed a sponsorship program for these women – providing work, housing and education for their children.

For example, it costs $1,200 to build a tukel (mud house with grass roof) for a woman and her children.

Mary's Crosses Micro-enterprise: MWP micro-enterprise, “Mary's Crosses” trains and employs returning slaves who have escaped from their Muslim slave owners. Mary's Crosses provides a means for their (and their children's) survival. These women make handcrafted crosses and other items, which are sold on our website for their support. Some of the women also work at our school/orphanage.

Women's Discipleship: Indigenously led Christian discipleship is an integral component of our sponsor program. These women receive much personal love and healing care through indigenous Christian leaders.
